Military Payment Currency
Military Payment Certificates (MPCs) differ from other types of U.S. paper money in several respects:
They were intended for circulation overseas for exclusive use by U.S. Military personnel.
MPCs were issued by the Department of Defense and not through the Treasury Department.
All Series of MPCs that were issued have been retired as currency.
Paper money is printed by engraving on paper containing silk fibers. MPCs are surface printed on paper containing small planchettes.
Thirteen different Series of MPCs were issued and used between 1946 and 1973. Two other Series (691 & 701) were printed in 1969 and 1970 but were never issued. All issued Series contained denominations of 5, 10, 25 and 50 cents plus $1, $5 and $10. The last three Series included $20 notes but no $2, $50 or $100 MPCs were ever issued.
Series 461, Issued September 16, 1946, Withdrawn March 10, 1947
