The set includes all four of the denominations in the World War II "Hawaii" emergency issue. As challenging as these are now to find in GEM grade it is even more amazing that each note has been awarded the Gem Uncirculated 66 grade by PMG. Adding to the rarity of the set each note has also received the prized designation "EPQ", for exceptional paper quality! At various times during American history emergency coins and currency have been issues by the government to deal with real or anticipated threats. One such example was the issue of World War II emergency notes with the word “HAWAII” overprinted on the reverse after the attack on Pearl Harbor by the Japanese. The plan was that if Hawaii was attacked again and overran by the Japanese the specially designated currency would be quickly withdrawn from circulation by the Treasury Department to prevent the money from benefiting the enemy. Withdrawing it from circulation would have the effect of making the currency worthless. These important examples of the evolution of American currency are increasingly difficult to find – especially in this rare GEM condition.
